Social commerce stopped being a trend a while ago; it’s just how a huge slice of online shopping works now. TikTok Shop is the clearest example: a full ecommerce layer inside the app where your customers already spend their evenings. If you sell physical products, it’s worth an hour of your attention.
👉 In this post, we’ll cover what TikTok Shop is, who can sell, what it costs, the affiliate engine that makes it unique, and whether it fits your store. Let’s get started!
TikTok Shop is TikTok’s built-in ecommerce feature, officially launched in September 2023. It lets users discover and buy products without ever leaving the app: through shoppable videos, a dedicated Shop tab, search, and livestreams. For sellers, it’s managed through a backend portal called Seller Center: product listings, inventory, orders, marketing campaigns, affiliate management, and analytics all live there.
The scale is no longer theoretical: TikTok Shop passed $100 million in US sales on Black Friday 2024 alone, and social commerce as an industry is projected to exceed $1 trillion globally by 2028. Whether or not those projections land, the direction is clear: discovery-led shopping (“I wasn’t looking for this, but I want it”) is TikTok Shop’s home turf, and it’s a different beast from search-led shopping on Amazon or Google.
TikTok Shop operates in the US, UK, and a growing list of other markets (much of Southeast Asia and beyond). To sell, you generally need:
⚖️ HONEST CAVEAT: TikTok’s US regulatory situation has been in flux for a while. The platform is operating, but check the current status before you build your entire sales strategy on it. The smart move is to treat TikTok Shop as a strong additional channel, not your only channel.
Here’s what makes TikTok Shop different from listing on a marketplace: the Creator Affiliate Program. You make your products available to TikTok’s army of creators, set a commission rate, and let them make shoppable videos promoting your stuff. They earn a cut of each sale; you get distribution you could never buy at the same price.

For a small brand, this changes the math completely. You don’t need an audience of your own to start: you need a product that demos well and a commission attractive enough that creators pick it up. Practical tips:
Live shopping (streaming while viewers buy tagged products in real time) is enormous in Asian markets and growing in the US, but it’s the most effort-intensive format on the platform. Our honest take: don’t start here. Get your product videos and affiliate engine working first, then test a monthly live once you have products that already sell asynchronously. Live rewards personality and consistency; a stiff weekly infomercial helps nobody.
TikTok Shop charges a referral fee per sale (a percentage that varies by category and has risen since launch), plus payment and transaction costs, plus whatever you spend on samples, affiliate commissions, and optional ads. Check the Seller Center for the current rate in your category before pricing, and model your margin with all three costs included, not just the referral fee. Products with healthy margins (think 50%+) have room to play; thin-margin commodity products usually don’t.
The pattern across successful sellers:
What struggles: boring replenishment products, anything that needs long explanation or sizing anxiety (complex apparel fits), and premium-priced items that demand research before purchase.

TikTok Shop lives inside TikTok, but your products shouldn’t live only there. Your other channels (Facebook, Instagram, X, your email list) are where repeat customers and non-TikTok audiences come from, and they need a steady drumbeat of product posts, not a once-a-month announcement.
This is where Revive Social earns its keep: it connects to your WordPress site and keeps product and blog content circulating on your connected social networks (Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and more) on a schedule. New posts go out automatically, and evergreen content (buying guides, product comparisons, reviews) gets recycled instead of forgotten. TikTok Shop handles the in-app discovery; an always-on distribution loop handles everything outside it. If you’re also selling through Instagram, our guide to shoppable posts on Instagram covers that side of social commerce.
TikTok Shop is the most interesting ecommerce channel to open up in years: a real shot at discovery-led sales without an existing audience, powered by creators who sell on commission. It rewards products that demo well, margins that can fund promotion, and sellers who treat creators as partners rather than ad slots. If that’s you, set up a Seller Center account this week and start with five products. And if you want the strategic foundation first, our TikTok marketing guide and TikTok for Business beginner’s guide will get you there.
