TikTok has rapidly become one of the most popular social media platforms, especially for young people. It offers an excellent opportunity to grow your business and attract new customers through targeted marketing strategies. However, it can be challenging to make your videos stand out and get them onto the For You page on TikTok.
The TikTok For You page enables your videos to reach wider audiences quickly. If the TikTok algorithm picks up and displays your content, you can accumulate new followers in no time. Fortunately, you can use a few strategies to maximize your chances of getting videos on this page.
In this guide, we’ll explain how to get your videos to appear on the For You page on TikTok. We’ll explore how this page works, and look at five actionable tips you can use to help your content shine. Let’s get started!
TikTok is one of the most popular apps worldwide, with around 205 million downloads[1] in the second quarter of 2021. It was originally a competitor of a similar app called Musical.ly, but now both platforms belong to the Chinese company Bytedance.
The platform reached popularity first in the Asia Pacific region, but now has increasingly more users from North America and the Middle East[2]. Most of these users are aged 10-19[3], but the older user demographic continues to grow. Therefore, we can consider it one of the most successful social media platforms available today.
The For You page on TikTok is the first thing you see when you open the app on your device:
It contains recommended videos that are selected especially for you by the TikTok algorithm.
This feed is distinct from the Following feed, which only shows clips from accounts that you subscribe to.
On the For You page, you can scroll down to see a collection of videos from popular accounts, and clips that are related to the content you’ve previously watched and interacted with.
Getting your videos onto the For You page is essential if you want to accumulate more followers quickly. It is a form of free advertising that can attract many views and subscribers if your content goes viral. There are various benefits to this, including the ability to promote your business to a wider audience.
TikTok members with at least 100,000 video views per month can access the TikTok Creator Fund. It is a communal pool of £231 million (around $319 million) shared with popular users based on their number of views, level of engagement from followers, and adherence to the Community Guidelines. Therefore, you can generate passive income if your TikTok account has responsive and active subscribers.
TikTok also provides an excellent opportunity for generating passive income via affiliate marketing.
You can record your own reviews and make profits every time a follower converts from your affiliate links. If you have a high number of subscribers, this can be a very lucrative venture.
For example, Rachel Meaders is a popular TikToker who produces product reviews and sells via affiliate links:

Additionally, many brands use TikTok as part of their social media marketing strategies. You can promote your company by showcasing its products, creating interactive content, and showing behind-the-scenes videos of how your business functions. As such, you can use the platform to engage further with your customer base and maintain brand loyalty.
Now that you know how important the For You page is, we can explore some actionable tips for getting your videos to appear there. Let’s take a look at some easy and effective strategies you can use.
Hashtags are essential tools on most social media platforms, including TikTok. They provide a way for you to mark your videos according to themes and topics, so users can find your content by searching for that hashtag.
For example, people who search for #DigitalMarketing are more likely to encounter your video if it carries that tag.
On TikTok, you can find hashtags as part of video captions:
Unlike Instagram or Twitter users, TikTokers tend to use fewer hashtags. This is because TikTok imposes a 100 character limit on video captions, meaning that you need to be concise with your written content. Although creators often use a small handful of hashtags with their videos, they have to be selective with their choices.
TikTok uses video information to recommend content to users on its For You page. This data can include factors like captions, hashtags, and included sounds. As such, users who regularly interact with and search for videos with your chosen hashtags are more likely to encounter your content.
Many people use the #fyp and #ForYou hashtags to get their videos onto the For You page on TikTok. This strategy can be beneficial, but it isn’t guaranteed that your content will make the cut. Therefore, we recommend including a mixture of trending and niche hashtags to help your videos reach a wider audience.
You can find trending content easily by navigating to the Discover tab on your TikTok account.
It includes popular sounds, effects, and hashtags in your region that you can use to stay on trend with your TikTok content.
TikTok enables you to record content from 15 seconds to three minutes. However, shorter videos tend to perform better on this platform. The first ten seconds of any video are the most important to keep your viewer engaged, and statistically you lose up to 1/3 of your viewers[4] once it reaches 30 seconds in length.
Additionally, the collective human attention span is narrowing over time. Social media and an abundance of information have made it harder for people to stay focused for long periods of time. So you can create a three-minute video if you wish, but it’s unlikely that all of your viewers will watch it in its entirety.
When you create a new video, you can choose from a time limit of 15 seconds, 30 seconds, or three minutes.
You can find this setting by tapping on the plus icon at the bottom of your screen, and then selecting one of the durations:
Choosing one of these settings ensures that your recording video doesn’t pass your desired duration.
If you prefer to record and upload videos to the TikTok platform, you can make your content shorter by dragging the borders at the bottom of the screen:
Video quality is also a crucial factor. TikTok is unlikely to put grainy and low-quality content on the For You page. As such, it’s in your best interests to use a device with high-definition recording abilities.
As we discussed earlier, captions are the blocks of text that accompany your videos. They include relevant hashtags, but you can also write your own content in these sections. They sit at the bottom of your videos, below your TikTok account name.
Captions are important because TikTok considers them as part of its recommendation algorithm. If you put relevant and engaging text with your videos, there is a greater chance that they could appear on the For You pages of more users.
Remember that you can only write up to 100 characters in a TikTok caption. You should consider allocating some of those characters to your relevant hashtags, so you will have limited words to work with for the rest.
You can write engaging TikTok video captions by including elements of surprise and mystery. Below we can see an example of teasing the content in the caption:
You can use this strategy in your captions by hinting at something that happens toward the middle or end of the video. By doing so, you can entice your viewers into clicking on your content and committing to it until the end.
Choosing the ideal posting time is a key strategy for any social media platform like Instagram or TikTok. If you upload your content when most of your followers or potential subscribers are asleep or inactive, you risk your video becoming buried and wasting the opportunity for conversions. Additionally, if your existing follower base is more interactive with your content, TikTok may see it as valuable content and rate it higher in its For You page algorithm.
You can view your follower analytics by converting your account to TikTok Pro.
You can do this by navigating to your profile page and tapping on Settings > Manage account > Switch to Business Account:
From here, you can choose a category for your account, such as Beauty or Finance:
Completing this step will create your TikTok Pro account. You can then access your analytics by navigating to Settings > Business suite > Analytics:
Once you have access to the analytics, you can view valuable data such as the number of views and interactions with your videos. If you navigate to the Followers tab, you can see detailed insights into your subscriber demographics, such as gender, location, and activity. Then you can plan your posts according to when they are most likely to be seen. However, you will need at least 100 followers to access this data.
Like hashtags, sounds also trend on TikTok. When songs or shorter audio clips are popular, videos with this content may find their way onto the For You page. This is particularly true for users who are already interacting with these sounds by watching, liking, and commenting on other recordings. Therefore, it could be in your best interests to include some of this viral content, particularly in the clips you want to reach a larger audience.
You can find trending sounds by tapping on the plus icon at the bottom of your screen, which will bring up the video recording platform.
From here, you can tap on Add sound at the top of your screen. Under the Discover tab, you can find popular audio in a variety of categories, including dance and jazz:
You can also find trending sounds by navigating to the Discover page, as we discussed earlier in this guide.
