Pick a WordPress theme for a business site and you’ll get a thousand “best themes” lists, most of them ranked by whoever paid the highest affiliate commission. This guide works differently: first the seven criteria that actually matter for a business site, then a short list of themes that demonstrably meet them, with the evidence shown. Choose in an hour instead of a week.
👉 In this post, we’ll cover what a business site needs from a theme, how to check any candidate yourself, five themes that meet the bar, and how to decide in 60 seconds. Let’s get started!
A business website has a boring, important job: load fast, look credible, and make it easy for a stranger to contact you or buy from you. Everything else is decoration. Judge every theme against this list:
| Criterion | Why it matters | How to check it yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Speed weight | Every 100 KB of theme bloat costs mobile visitors (and rankings) | Run the theme’s demo through PageSpeed Insights; under ~50 requests and a fast LCP is good |
| Mobile-first design | Most of your visitors arrive on a phone, especially from social | Open the demo on your own phone, not the desktop preview |
| Customization without code | You will want to change colors, fonts, and layouts yourself | Check the Customizer or site-editor options in the live demo |
| Plugin compatibility | Your forms, SEO, and social plugins must not break | Look for explicit compatibility notes and active testing |
| Update cadence | An abandoned theme is a security and compatibility time bomb | wp.org shows “last updated” on every theme page; recent = alive |
| Support and docs | When something breaks at 9pm, docs decide if you sleep | Search the theme’s docs site and support forum response times |
| Price structure | Free tier you can grow on, or a pro price you’ll happily pay | Compare what the free version actually includes, not the sales page promise |
We checked the current candidates against those criteria. Five earn a spot for a business site in 2026, our own first, the rest alphabetical, with the honest trade-offs:
We have bias, but Neve is our own theme, and we include it on the same evidence as the rest: a ~28 KB default install per the vendor, AMP-ready mobile-first design, 100+ starter sites including business-specific ones, a free version that covers a full business site, and Pro from $69/year introductory (renews at list price) for the header/footer and layout upgrades. It works with Gutenberg and all major page builders, and it’s actively maintained (updated within the last month at the time of writing).
Astra is one of the most installed themes on wp.org for a reason: it’s light, it’s fast, and its starter templates cover most business types (services, restaurants, agencies, local shops). The free version is genuinely usable for a simple business site. Astra Pro starts at $59/year and adds the layout and header/footer controls most businesses end up wanting.
Blocksy is one of the newer generation of block-ready themes, and it shows: modern Customizer, strong header/footer builder, WooCommerce support that’s actually thought through, and good performance out of the box. The free tier is generous; Pro starts at $69/year.
GeneratePress is the minimalist’s pick: famously tiny code footprint, no jQuery, accessibility-first. It won’t wow you with starter sites; it will never get in your way either. GP Premium is $59/year (or a one-time lifetime option) and unlocks the module system most users want.
Kadence pairs a strong free theme with one of the best header/footer builders around, plus its own blocks plugin if you want landing pages without a page builder. The free theme covers a real business site; bundles start at $99/year when you want the pro theme features plus the plugin suite.
All five themes have free versions good enough to launch a real business site. Pay when one of these becomes true: you need header/footer layouts the free version locks (the most common trigger), you want the pro starter templates (saves a weekend of design), or you need priority support because your site is now business-critical. Don’t pay for a theme because a list told you to; pay when you hit a specific wall the pro version removes.

Still stuck? Install the free version of your top two on a test site and spend 20 minutes in each Customizer. The right one becomes obvious faster than any review can make it.

Whichever theme you pick, do three things before you call it done: set a site-wide social preview image in your SEO plugin (so every share shows your brand, not a random crop), add your social profiles to the contact page and footer (themes make this easy; use it), and test your homepage link in each platform’s debugger so the preview looks intentional. Our social media image sizes cheat sheet has the exact dimensions for the preview image and every platform graphic you’ll need next.
A business theme is infrastructure, not fashion: fast, credible, maintainable, and out of your way. Judge candidates against the seven criteria, ignore the affiliate-ranked lists, and let the 60-second guide do its job. Any of the five above will serve a business site well; the best one is the one you stop researching and start building on.
